A tornado tore its way from Cedar Lake to Valparaiso late Monday night packing winds up to 90 mph, the National Weather Service confirmed Thursday night.

The tornado cut a 29-mile path, 300 yards wide between 9:52 p.m. and 10:20 p.m., according to the NWS.

This is an extension of an earlier report by the NWS of a tornado tearing its way from Cedar Lake to Crown Point.

"This brings our current tornado count for the July 15th derecho event up to 22 (tied for the daily record in our forecast area), and brings the July 14-15 2-day total up to 28," the NWS said.

NIPSCO last reported that 2,000 of its customers remained without power as of Thursday night.

"Crews are working through the remaining 1,530 individual repairs," the company said. "Much of the work is to address the damage caused by the storm’s 80 mph winds including removing trees from lines, replacing broken poles and fixing downed wire."
