Orange Custard Kiss Biscuits - Recipe Winners (1)

Orange Custard Kiss Biscuits, is the recipe you have to have. When we take this little biscuit to any occasion, ours is the first plate to be emptied. Melt in your mouth and finished with a custard buttercream, OMG

Orange Custard Kiss Biscuits are ridiculously easy to make, moreish, dainty, quick to whip up, and literally melt in your mouth. They’re a shortbread biscuit joined with a delicious custard buttercream a recipe that’s been around for years, and one that our Mum, Noela would regularly make.

In fact, we think almost everyone’s grandmother would have had a recipe as they’re a sentimental, and still popular biscuit in Australia.

Easy to make

While they’re cooking make up the custard buttercream filling by simply mixing some butter and icing sugar together till combined.

Orange Custard Kiss Biscuits can be whipped up with basic pantry ingredients (well, we did have to go and buy the custard powder) in minutes and they’re very economical.

First up you cream the butter and sugar until it’s light and fluffy (important).

Next, sift the flour and custard powder over the creamed sugar and butter and mix until the ingredients are just combined – it’s important not to overbeat at this stage.

Roll small balls of the dough and place them on your baking paper lined baking sheet – we actually weighed each ball so our biscuits were identical.

Use the back of a fork dipped in water to gently press the balls of dough leaving a shallow impression of the fork and bake for 50 – 60 minutes, till they’re cooked through and retain the original creamy colour.

Once the biscuits are cooled sandwich the biscuits together with some buttercream and they’re good to go. Very, very easy. Very, very tasty

Recipe tips

  • make sure you cream the butter and sugar really well
  • when you add the flour and custard powder just beat it until it combines – it’s important not to over mix once these ingredients are combined – see photo above
  • roll the dough into very small balls even weighing each ball which will ensure you end up with same size biscuits to neatly sandwich them together
  • make sure your oven isn’t too hot which will cause the biscuits to crack
  • turn your tray around halfway through cooking for even colour
  • when you sandwich the biscuits together ensure the fork marks are running the same way, it won’t matter one dot if they’re not but the presentation is nicer.

How to store orange custard kiss biscuits

Our Mum always kept her orange custard kiss biscuits in a covered container in the fridge, but you can keep them in a cool place for 4-5 days. Our biscuits rarely lasted that long, with five kids constantly at the fridge!

What’s the difference between orange custard kiss biscuits and melting moments

Basically there’s not much difference at all. Custard kiss biscuits and melting moments are very similar in taste and texture, but custard kisses are made using custard powder rather than cornflour (cornstarch) and in this instance, we’ve added the orange rind.
