Mexican Fried Bananas – I used to live in Southern Mexico (Tabasco, to be exact) where bananas grow wild just like the monkeys. No. Not kidding.
I fell in love with this dessert at first bite. So yummy and so delicious. The best part is that it is ready in minutes.
All you need are a handful of ingredients and grab a fork… It’s dessert time!

How to Make It
- Slice the plantains.
- 1 plantain per person.
- Sprinkle with ground cinnamon.
Have all your ingredients ready. This is a very simple dessert, and it comes together in minutes.
These are ripe plantains. The skins will be black not green. If they are green, leave them on the counter for a few days until they turn black.
Can I fry bananas instead of plantains?
Yes! You can also use regular bananas.
Bananas are a very popular ingredient in Mexican recipes. Add a few slices to Avena (Mexican Oatmeal) or make Banana Agua Fresca.
- Melt butter and add the plantains.
- Stir occasionally with your spatula.
Don’t go far. This will literally take minutes. About 2 minutes on each side.
What is the difference between a banana and a plantain?
Plantains are a type of banana. They have a higher concentration of starch and lower in sugar. Do not eat them raw even if you’re tempted to. They will have the texture of a banana but without the taste.
Bananas, on the other hand, are sweet, good as snacks, and eaten raw.
- Remove from the skillet and place on a plate.
- Drizzle with sweetened condensed milk.
Plantains, when pan fried, crisp up around the edges, but they are still soft inside.
How much sweetened condensed milk to add is up to YOU. You can add as much as your heart desires!
Pro Tip:
Look for the smaller containers of sweetened condensed milk with an easy open top. They are meant for single use. That way, you don’t have to transfer any unused sweetened condensed milk to another container and make a sticky mess.
Other Toppings to Add:
- Queso Fresco
- Cotija Cheese
- Nuts
- Chocolate Chips
Is fried banana good for you?
Plantains are a good source of nutrients – potassium, magnesium, vitamin C, and fiber. In terms of desserts, this dessert is much better for you than others.
What is a Mexican banana called?
In Mexico and in Spain, a banana is called a plátano. Other Spanish speaking countries call it banana.

How Long Does It Last?
In the fridge, Mexican Fried Bananas will last up to 3 days. Freezing is not recommended as the bananas or plantains will become too mushy.
