What features should I look for in a track and field shoe?
Whether you’re looking for track and field shoes for men or women’s track shoes, the style needed depends on your event. In track and field, you have sprints, middle distance, long distance, jumps, and throws. In general, you should look for lightweight, low profile shoes that improve speed, toe-off, and traction when competing. Most spikes have anywhere from 5 to 8 spikes you can screw in per shoe.
Sprint spikes such as the Nike Zoom Superfly Elite and the Nike Zoom Rival S are built for the 60m dash through the 400m. These shoes have solid rubber heels and stiff plates, which are necessary for sprints, as they grip the track and force you on your toes. Because you’re typically running for less than a minute, sprint spikes are intentionally less cushioned than other track and field shoes for maximum propulsion.Middle distance spikes such as the Nike Zoom Rival D and the Nike Zoom Air Victory provide the perfect balance of speed and cushion for events including the 800m, 600m, 1500m, mile, and 3000. They are responsive, lightweight, and softer on landing compared to sprint spikes. Longer distance spikes, such as the Nike Zoom Matumbo are ideal for 5k or 10k racing, as they provide slightly more support and cushion that are much needed for 12+ laps on the track. For field events, Road Runner Sports carries shoes made for jumps and throws. If you’re a long jumper or triple jumper, the Air Zoom LJ Elite and Triple Jump Elite provide a highly cushioned, thicker midsole for maximum shock absorption and full-length carbon plate for stability as you push off the track. For discus and hammer throws, the Nike Zoom Rotational provides excellent grip and support that tucks the heel in and easily rotates on the ground while you throw. It's important to purchase the right track and field shoe for your specific event to reduce risk of injury, increase speed, and get the most traction off the ground.
How much support do Nike track and field shoes provide?
Unlike your daily trainers, track and field shoes do not have as much arch support and cushion because they are designed for high-intensity workouts and racing. However, Nike still designs spikes with support in mind.Features include:Lightweight, contoured fit with FlyKnit material fits your foot like a gloveNo-sew overlays add support in the heelInternal arch bands secure the midfoot, so the shoe doesn’t feel flimsyEVA sock liners in sprint spikes conform to the shape of your foot
Can men's Nike track and field shoes be used for running?
Yes, men’s Nike track and field shoes are designed for running on track or turf surfaces. Track and field shoes should only be worn when doing interval workouts or racing in competition, and are not meant to be used as daily trainers. On average, most track and field athletes will wear their spikes once or twice a week when training for their event. From track spikes to running shoes, Road Runner Sports has you covered.
