Food allergies are a pain in the butt.

As someone who’s suffered from hers for as long as she can remember, I often don’t even realize how big of an impact ithas on my life,or how much itaffects my thoughts and actions on a daily basis— it’s just life as I know it. From automaticallychecking food labels to constantly interrogating waiters/cooks/anyone trying to feed me, my allergy to peanuts is something I alwayshaveto manage and can never really escape. And I imagine it’s the same thing for thosewho suffer from any other kind of food allergies, whether itbe gluten, nuts, dairy, or eggs.

But that just makes it sound all doom and gloom, doesn’t it? And I feel likeit mustlook that way from the outside since I’m constantly having peopletell me: “I have no idea how you live likethat — I’d probably die.” But it’s really not that bad. Like I said, it’s the only life I’ve ever known, so it feels pretty normal to me.

The only times I really notice it are in social situations where I’m having a hard time time finding something I can eat or when the people I’m with are eating something that I can’t have…but even then, I’ve learned to deal. The trick is to focus on all of the things that youcan have instead of those that you can’t, because no matter what kind of allergies or intolerances you might be dealing with, there are plenty of amazing things you can whip up in your kitchen that make those allergies that much easier to bear. I even took the liberty of finding some for you!

Neither me nor any close friends or family members have any intolerances. I feel a little sorry for those with them as choices in stores and restaurants are still scarce over here. If I knew people with intolerances, though, I’d make sure to cater them well when they visit. Nobody should feel left out and luckily, bloggers overseas come up with great recipes like these.

This is so helpful. We just found out Dave has peanut allergy, walnut allergy, sesame seed allergy and wheat allergy. I’ve been praising sunflower seeds lately! But experimenting in the kitchen has been fun. Pinning!!

While I don’t know of any full blown allergies ( I don’t have fatal reactions with any foods ) I definitely have an intolerance to a HANDFUL of foods that has become quite annoying. Thank goodness for my upcoming test to see what’s going on behind the scenes of my body. I need all of these while I wait.

I’m curious to hear what they tell you! Hopefully you get some of the answers you need. I know how annoying it can be to play those guessing games 😡

I’m sure you’ve noticed that I do not have many (read: any) food allergies, but I would have any of these snacks in a heartbeat. Thanks for this roundup!

I’ll definitely have to try some of these! I just became lactose intolerant a couple years ago, so I’m always looking for new dairy free recipes. The strawberry banana oat bars are delicious!

Oh wow- great round up of recipes Amanda. Although I don’t suffer from any allergies myself, I do try to eat a low-dairy diet so I’m always checking labels when picking out snack bars/products. I love your point about focusing on foods that you can eat versus what you can’t eat- with a bit of experimentation and willingness to try new recipes/products, the options really are endless. I truly don’t think there’s any one food I couldn’t live without because in a matter of time, chances are I’d find a good enough alternative. I love the look of those Devil Food Cake Buckwheat Cupcakes- can you say dreamy!!

So many delicious looking sweets and I haven’t even eaten breakfast yet. Ahhhh, you’ve tainted me for the rest of the day.

Confession: I like it. Plus I have double chocolate coconut granola waiting for me at work so it’s all good. 🙂

What you said is SO true! People get so dramatic when they say they’d cry if they were allergic to nuts but like seriously, it’s not that bad. That being said, I’d cry if I was allergy to dairy ha!

    Thanks for including my recipe!

For me the toughest part with allergies is trying not to seem too high maintenance while also making it clear that yes, it does matter if there is a “little bit” of wheat or almonds because it isn’t a lifestyle choice, it’s a health hazard. And also, dealing with comments about how difficult it must be. So now I like to make allergy friendly treats to share with others to show them that I’m not deprived!

That’s something I can definitely relate to! And it’s the worst when you have to pass on something that someone made because you just can’t be sure how careful they were. I don’t want to come across as rude, but it’s kind of a life or death thing… ya know?

SO many good recipes and drool worthy pictures in this post. While I don’t suffer from any allergies or sensitivities, it never hurts to experiment with these types of recipes and expose yourself to alternate ingredients and different baking ingredients :).

Love that attitude! I actually think that’s one of my favourite things about vegan baking — getting to experiment with things that I wasn’t previously familiar with.

I don’t have any food allergies, but I have several friends that do. The only thing I would be worried about is eating at restaurants, because they sometimes cross contaminate!

This is awesome! So glad you posted this. I had to be soy and dairy free the first year of my son’s life because he had an intolerance (thankfully he grew out of it!!) and I’ll orobaby have to do the same with my next baby as well. Snacks were probably the hardest fir me since hummus and veg only is good fir so many days…

I don’t have any (known) allergies or sensitivities, but I really prefer to make desserts free of things just because they always digest better and don’t set my need for sugar off the charts. Thanks for sharing such a delicious list of friendly foods!

Food allergies really are tough. I’m sure you want to punch peanut butter in the face on a regular basis. Love love love that you focus on all the yums that you CAN have rather than those that you can’t. This round-up is making me drool all over my computer, lovely! Thanks for including my little bites 🙂

These all look fantastic. I currently have several tabs open. Now that I am on the low-FODMAP diet, I have a lot of restrictions on what I can eat, so it is giving me a little insight into what it’s like to live with an allergy (though I won’t end up in the ER, just have stomach distress). Your compassion behind the post shines through.

Right?! I still remember being surrounded by peanut butter when I was going to school, so I think it’s awesome that they’re being so much more careful with it now.
